Clogged Sewer Drains Can Be A Headache

Clogged sewer lines can cause multiple problems for homeowners in the form of backed-up drains and toilets, or even worst, burst pipes. Clogs in sewer lines have many causes including grease and fats, hair, dirt and debris and even tree roots. Once the pressure builds up too much, the pipes will back up and force the contaminated water and solid matter backwards and out through your toilet and drains. GROSS!

The Sewer Jetting Process

Sewer jetting is when a long flexible water jet is inserted into the sewer lines. The jetter has a motorized pump that forces water at a very high pressure through the sewer line to break up clogs. The process is very similar to using a power washer. The forward flow of water forces debris through the pipe, then a backend jet cleans the inside of the pipes and gets rid of build-up like limescale.

Jet vs. Snake

A snake or plumber’s augur is useful only if the clog isn’t lodged too far down the pipe. Unfortunately, this method is ineffective against major obstructions like limescale deposits or small tree roots. The intense water pressure from the jetter will effectively get rid of these obstructions. However, in the case of large tree roots, that may require a more extensive solution, such as removing the tree.

DIY Project?

You can, but only you are certain about what you’re doing and have the proper equipment, such as a power washer. Keep in mind that you will be working with extremely high water pressure and if something misfires, you could cause a lot more damage than what you started with. Sewage back-up is a nightmare to clean up and can harbor harmful bacteria and encourage mold growth. It’s really best to leave sewer jetting to the licensed plumbers at Calhoun.  We are available 24/7 to help you with your clogged sewer lines and other plumbing problems.

Preventive Measures

While there is little you can do about limescale deposits and tree root growth, there are steps you can take to minimize sewer line clogs. Be mindful of what you pour down the sink and discard fats and grease in a separate container for disposal. In the bathroom, only human waste and toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet. You can also clean hair from your drains on a regular basis and follow the manufacturer’s instructions about what can be safely put down the garbage disposal.
